On the 2nd of March, one day before the Roundtables of SIRG PIMD, the researchers of the SIRG PIMD gathered during the 10th ECRM. You can find the full Report HERE.
We started with coffee and tea at the Katholische Hochschule fur Sozialwesen in Berlin. To get to know each other we started with an introduction game. In doing this game, it appeared, our mutual interest in (research concerning) individuals with PIMD is not the only thing we have in common. |
Next, there were interesting presentations about the research projects of five Early Career Researchers. Anne-Marie Martin (University College Cork, Ireland) presented about processes and procedures to obtain consent from, protect the privacy and anonymity of and limit exposure to
research/participation demand on people with severe/profound intellectual disability. Nicole van den Dries (RUG, the Netherlands) presented results of the systematic review she conducted, aiming to determine the factors related to the quality of life of families with a child with ID in order to provide the right support to these families. Wieneke Penninga (Tilburg University, the Netherlands) presented the outline and subject of her PhD project on meaningful moments of interaction between professional caregivers and individuals with PID or PIMD. After a short coffee and tea break, Torsten Krämer (Pädagogische Hochschule Heidelberg, Germany) presented the results of his preliminary study concerning the expression of emotions of people with PIMD using physiological measurements. Meike Engelhardt (Pädagogische Hochschule Heidelberg, Germany) introduced the background of her study on assistive technology for unfamiliar caregivers of persons with profound intellectual and multiple disabilities and shared some preliminary results of data analysis.
After a lunch break, we focused on methodological issues. Prof. Dr. Bea Maes introduced this session; afterwards we discussed several methodological issues in six workshops. The themes of the workshops were:
In the evening, we had a social dinner, with early career researchers and senior researchers. It was a very inspiring and interesting meeting!

- Demarcation of the target group
- Use and development of theoretical models
- Recruitment of participants
- Including the ‘voice’ of persons with PIMD
- Data collection and instruments
- Data analyses
